Callao, the largest and most important port in Peru, was founded in 1537
by Spanish colonists, two years after Lima. It has a population of
approximately 800 000 inhabitants.
This port city has a very important historical value. It was once the most important port in the whole Spanish-ruled South America. The city was also scenery of the Battle of Callao, on May 2nd, 1886, when the Spanish fleet tried to reconquer Peru. Furthermore, the city features many historical attractions such as the Fortress of Real Felipe that was built by Spaniards in order to protect the city from the attacks of the pirates.
